Watch out! Humpback whale calf sightings further South
Recent research led by UNSW Sydney has uncovered that humpback whales are giving birth much further south than previously believed, with sightings extending as far as Tasmania and New Zealand’s South Island. So, maybe they will give birth in Hervey Bay, Queensland! We provide 5 star rated whale watching cruises in Hervey Bay, the whale-watching capital of Australia. Traditionally, it was thought that humpbacks migrated north to tropical waters like the Great Barrier Reef to calve. However, over 200 sightings of newborn calves have been reported in these unexpected southern locations, challenging long-held assumptions about their breeding behaviours .
Will you enjoy a humpback whale calf sighting with us? We start our whale watching cruises on 4th July and run through to mid October. We see the juveniles in the first few weeks, followed by the massive adults with mums and babies following on behind. Will this change as the population continues to increase? Book now to find out!
